C Type Mechanical Power Press

The C type mechanical power press, also often called an open-type mechanical press or C-frame mechanical press, gets its name from its “C”-shaped frame. It’s used in industrial production for a variety of processes, including metal punching, blanking, bending, folding, shallow drawing, etc.

This unique C-shaped opening allows the mold to be clamped and operated from the front, left, and right, facilitating material loading and unloading and monitoring the production process. It’s particularly suitable for processing small and medium-sized parts.

Core Technical Parameters of a C-type Mechanical Power Press (Varies by Brand and Model):

  • Motor Power: Typically 1-40kW.
  • Nominal Force/Tonnage: Common tonnages range from 5, 25, 50, to 160 tons. Some large C-type mechanical power presses even reach 4,000 kN (approximately 400 tons).
  • Press Speed/Strokes: Refers to the number of reciprocating motions the slide completes per minute, typically ranging from dozens to over a hundred per minute.

The following parameters often vary depending on application requirements. World Group can customize these parameters to meet customer needs.

  • Slide Stroke: Refers to the distance the slide travels from top dead center to bottom dead center.
  • Die Height: The distance from the bottom of the slide to the worktable when the slide is at bottom dead center and stroke is adjusted to maximum. This determines the maximum height that can accommodate a mold.
  • Bolster Area: The range of mold sizes that can be installed.
  • Slide Adjustment: Used to fine-tune the closing height to accommodate molds of varying heights.

Main Components of a C Type Mechanical Power Press

A typical C-type mechanical power press consists of the following components:

Frame: Made of cast iron or welded steel, it withstands the reaction force generated during stamping, ensuring overall rigidity and positioning accuracy.

Drive System: Consists of an electric motor, flywheel, clutch, gears (gearwheel/pinion), and crankshaft (or eccentric gear). The motor drives the flywheel to store energy, the clutch controls start/stop, and the gears transmit power to the crankshaft. The crankshaft, through connecting rods, converts circular motion into linear reciprocating motion for the slide.

Wet Clutch

Slide: Connected to the crankshaft via connecting rods, it reciprocates up and down along the guide rails of the frame. The punch is mounted on top, pressing the workpiece downward; the slide itself is also equipped with a position sensor and safety stop.

Slider

Bolster: Fixed to the bottom of the frame, it houses the die, provides support, and transmits the stamping reaction force. The workbench is typically equipped with an adjustment mechanism for quick mold changes.

Control System: This includes an electrical control cabinet, an operator panel, and a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), enabling automated control of the clutch, brake, stroke counter, speed control, and other functions. Modern machines can also integrate with MES/IoT for remote monitoring and data collection.

PLC Panel

Safety Devices and Overload Protection: These primarily include emergency stop buttons, travel limit switches, overload detection (torque/current monitoring), and guardrails/light barriers. These ensure immediate stopping of the press in the event of an abnormality, protecting both the operator and the equipment.

Control System and Automation Options for C-Type Mechanical Power Presses

  • PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) improves control efficiency and precision
  • Touchscreen HMI (HMI) enables human-machine interaction
  • Inverter for speed control
  • Automation Integration: Optional configurations include automatic feeders, material levelers, quick die changers (QDCs), photoelectric protection devices (light curtains), and finished product conveyors.
