H Type Power Press Machine

The H type power press machine, also known as the H-Frame Press, is a heavy-duty industrial machine. Its name stems from its iconic closed-frame structure, resembling a capital “H.” This structural design distinguishes it from other types of presses, such as C-type (open-frame) power presses, and provides exceptional rigidity and stability.

Main Components of an H-Type Power Press Machine

H Type Power Press

Frame: The main body of the machine, also known as the H-shaped structure. It bears the weight of all components and the enormous reaction forces generated during operation, ensuring the machine’s rigidity, stability, and precision.

Slide/Ram with Guideways: Guideways ensure precise movement of the slide or press head. The ram is the actuator that applies pressure to the workpiece by moving up and down. It typically works in conjunction with the mold to perform operations such as forming and stamping.

Crankshaft/Eccentric (Mechanical) or Cylinder (Hydraulic): Mechanical presses are driven by a crankshaft or eccentric, while hydraulic presses use an air or hydraulic cylinder to drive the slide.

Flywheel, Clutch, and Brake (unique to mechanical power presses): These control power transmission and speed regulation to ensure smooth operation.

Bed/Bolster Plate (Workpiece Support—can be fixed or adjustable): The bed is the foundation of the H-type power press, supporting the entire structure and providing a work surface for mounting the mold and workpiece.

Mold Clamping System and Demolding Device: The former secures and adjusts the mold to ensure machining accuracy. The latter quickly ejects the workpiece after the forming step is complete.

Gearbox (if equipped with a gear drive), Motor, and Drivetrain: These are used in the drive system to regulate speed and power transmission. Lubrication System & Guard: Ensure smooth equipment operation and provide safety protection.

Common Types of H-Type Presses

The most common types in modern industry include mechanical and hydraulic types. As technology matures, servo-type presses are becoming more common.

1. Mechanical (crank) H-presses

Featuring high speed and efficiency, they are suitable for high-volume, standardized processes such as blanking, bending, and shallow drawing. Tonnages typically range from medium to large, for example, 100 to 3,500 tons.

2. Hydraulic H-frame presses

This is the most common type. The pressure can be infinitely adjusted over a wide range, and the stroke can be controlled, making it easy to achieve holding pressure and slow pressing speeds. It is particularly suitable for processes requiring high pressure control, such as drawing, fine blanking, forging, and press fitting. The tonnage range is extremely wide, ranging from tens of tons to tens of thousands of tons.

3. Servo-assisted variants

Driven by precise servo motors, arbitrary slide motion curves can be programmed. They combine the high speed of a mechanical press with the flexible control of a hydraulic press, offering exceptional accuracy and significant energy savings.

How Does H-type Power Press Work?

The operating principle of an H-type power press machine depends primarily on its drive method. The most common types include hydraulic and mechanical drives. Modern trends also include more advanced servo drives.

Hydraulic Power Press Working Principle

Most H-type power press machines are hydraulically driven. Their operating principle is based on Pascal’s Law, which states that pressure applied to a confined fluid (hydraulic oil) is evenly distributed throughout the fluid. When the hydraulic pump draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir, it converts the mechanical energy (rotational energy) input by the motor into the pressure energy of the hydraulic oil. The control valve group precisely controls the pressure, flow, and direction of the hydraulic oil, allowing the high-pressure oil to push the piston and the connected slide (ram) downward, exerting tremendous pressure on the workpiece and die on the worktable, thereby performing processes such as stamping and forging.

Mechanical Power Press Working Principle

The operating principle of a mechanical H-type power press machine is to convert the rotational motion of the motor into linear reciprocating motion of the slide through a purely mechanical mechanism. The motor drives a large flywheel via a belt or gears to store energy. When the clutch is engaged, the flywheel’s energy is converted into vertical reciprocating motion of the slider through the crankshaft, connecting rod, and other transmission mechanisms.

Servo Power Press Working Principle

Servo drive has been a hot topic in recent technological development, combining the advantages of mechanical and hydraulic systems. The Servo H-Type Power Press Machine uses a high-precision servo motor to directly drive a ball screw (mechanical) or a hydraulic pump (servo-hydraulic), enabling fully programmable and closed-loop control of the slider’s motion profile (including speed, position, and pressure).

Factors to Consider When Selecting an H-Type Power Press Machine

Nominal Pressure/Tonnage: The primary selection factor. The required tonnage must be calculated based on the workpiece material, thickness, process type (blanking, drawing, etc.), and die size. A 20%-30% safety margin should be allowed to avoid overloading and premature wear.

Slider Stroke (mm): This refers to the maximum distance the slide can move from top dead center to bottom dead center. Ensure that the stroke is sufficient to accommodate the die closing height, workpiece height, and the necessary clearance for die changing. Hydraulic presses typically have adjustable stroke.

Maximum Shut Height and Daylight Height: Shut height refers to the distance from the bottom of the slide to the worktable when the slide is at bottom dead center (with the stroke adjusted to maximum); daylight height refers to the distance from the bottom of the slide to the worktable when the slide is at top dead center. These two parameters determine the maximum usable die size.

Bed/Bolster Area: The left-right width and front-to-back depth of the workbench must be larger than the mold base, leaving ample space for the press plate or fixture.

Speed: This includes the slide’s downward speed, working (pressing) speed, and return speed. The speed should be selected based on production cycle and process requirements. High speed means high efficiency, but some deep drawing processes require a slower, more constant speed.

Motor Power and Control Functionality: Motor power must match production requirements, and control functions (such as safety devices and automation) must meet safety and efficiency requirements. Requirements for safety devices (such as photoelectric protection) and automated feeding are mentioned.
