What is Mechanical Punch Press Machine?

Mechanical punch press, also often called mechanical stamping press, is a mechanical device used for metal processing. It is mainly used to generate pressure through a mechanical transmission system to process metal sheets or other materials into the desired shape. Its main functions are stamping, blanking, piercing, drawing, coining, embossing, intricate forming, bending.

How Does Mechanical Punch Press Work?

The mechanical punch press transmits power through a mechanical transmission system (such as flywheels and gears) and uses a punch slide to apply pressure to the metal sheet to cause it to plastically deform or cut out the desired shape. The slide is used in conjunction with a die, which is fixed on the lower workbench. The metal sheet is clamped between the dies. When the slide descends, the sheet is sheared or molded into a specific shape.

Types Of Mechanical Punch Press

Type 1: Crank Stamping Press (Single/Double Crank)

Crank stamping press is a mechanical stamping press that uses a crank-connecting rod mechanism to transmit power. The crankshaft and connecting rod convert the rotational motion into linear motion, thereby driving the slider to perform stamping operations.

Crank stamping press is divided into single crank press and double crank press.

Single Crank Press: This type has one crankshaft located at the center of the machine, connected to the ram (or slide). The force is applied centrally, making it suitable for smaller or medium-sized parts and simpler operations like punching, blanking, and forming.

The design is straightforward, which makes these presses easier to operate and maintain, and generally less expensive.

Double Crank Press: This type uses two crankshafts, typically positioned at either end of a wider ram. The dual crankshafts provide two points of force and suspension, resulting in greater stability, higher precision, and the ability to handle larger dies and workpieces.

Double crank presses are preferred for high-tonnage applications, larger parts, and progressive die stamping, where a wider worktable and better ram alignment are necessary.

Type 2: Flywheel Drive Mechanical Punch Press

Flywheel Drive Mechanical Punch Press is a mechanical device that uses a flywheel to store energy and realizes punching operations through a mechanical transmission system. Its working principle is to drive the flywheel to rotate through an electric motor to store energy, and then transfer the energy to the punch through a clutch and a mechanical connecting rod to complete the punching action.

Features:

  • As the main energy storage device, the flywheel can provide continuous and stable power output.
  • The structure is simple and suitable for small and medium-sized production needs.
  • Suitable for short-stroke, high-frequency punching tasks such as punching and cutting.

Type 3: Gap-Frame Mechanical Press (C-Frame)

Gap-frame stamping press, also known as C-frame stamping press, is a mechanical punch press with a “C”-shaped body. It is characterized by open sides and rear of the body, which is convenient for mold installation and workpiece loading and unloading.

Features:

  • The open design provides a larger operating space and facilitates access to the mold from multiple directions.
  • Suitable for the operation of smallworkpieces or complex molds, especially for mass production.
  • Relatively low rigidity, but high flexibility, suitable for scenes where frequent mold changes are required.

Type 4: Straight-Side Mechanical Press (H-Frame)

Straight-side mechanical press, also commonly known as H frame punch press, is a stamping press with a frame-shaped structure, upright columns on both sides, and a closed body, usually used for heavy metal processing.

Features:

  • The closed design provides higher rigidity and stability, suitable for stamping tasks with heavy loads.
  • Suitable for heavy metal forming, bending and stretching operations, especially for industrial applications requiring high precision and high strength.

Due to its high rigidity and low deformation, it performs well in precision processing.

Type 5: Open Back Inclinable (OBI) Press

The open back inclinable stamping press is a mechanical punch press with an opening on the back and can be tilted. Its design allows the user to adjust the workbench angle as needed.

Features:

  • The back opening facilitates the loading and unloading of workpieces, while the tilting function makes the operation more flexible.
  • Suitable for scenarios where frequent mold changes or workbench height adjustments are required.
  • Flexible structure, suitable for a variety of process requirements, such as punching, trimming and forming.

Type 6: Knuckle-Joint Press

The knuckle-joint stamping press is a stamping press that uses a toggle mechanism to drive the slider.

Features:

  • The knuckle-joint mechanism can provide a large deformation force and is suitable for processing workpieces with high precision requirements.
  • Due to the short slider stroke, it is suitable for stamping small or precision parts.

The compact structure is suitable for mass production of small workpieces.
